The production process of automotive air filters usually involves multiple steps, from raw material processing to finished product packaging. Each step is related to the performance and quality of the filter. The following is an overview of the production process of a standard automotive air filter:
production process of automotive air filters
Raw material preparation
Filter paper/filter material: Select appropriate paper-based, synthetic fiber, nanofiber or electrostatic material.
Plastic parts/rubber parts: filter frames, end covers, etc.
Adhesive: Used for sealing, bonding filter paper and shells.
Metal mesh (if any) : To reinforce the structure of the filter paper or protect the outer layer.
Filter material treatment and cutting
Pre-treatment of filter paper (such as sizing, embossing, heating and setting, etc.)
Cut the filter paper to the appropriate size to prepare for folding
Fold the filter paper
Use a fully automatic filter paper folding machine to fold the filter paper in a wavy or straight shape to expand the filtration area.
The folding height and density need to be strictly controlled to ensure ventilation volume and filtration effect.
Hot pressing/setting
The folded filter paper will be heat-pressed to set its shape, making its structure stable and maintaining it in the specified form.
End cover sealing
Fix the two ends into shape by injection molding or adhesive, and then encapsulate the end cover.
Some filters will adopt an integrated injection molding process to enhance sealing performance.
Outer frame assembly
Insert the filter element (filter paper + end cover) into the outer frame or bracket (usually a plastic part or a metal frame).
Install sealing rings or foam dust-proof strips to ensure good sealing during loading.
Inspection and Testing
Visual inspection: Whether there is any deformation, damage, glue overflow, etc.
Dimensional inspection: Whether it meets the requirements of the technical drawings.
Functional test
Air flow resistance test (pressure drop
Filtration efficiency test (such as particle size comparison)
Bonding strength test
Laser marking/coding
Print the product model, batch number, production date, etc. on the filter housing or end cover.
Packaging and Warehousing
Use dust-proof packaging (such as plastic bags, paper boxes, etc.)
Pack and store in the warehouse, ready for shipment
supplement: Key points of quality management
The incoming filter materials need to be tested for their air permeability, thickness and tensile strength
The entire production process must comply with the IATF 16949 quality management system (automotive industry standard).
High-end manufacturers will complete assembly in clean workshops to avoid dust pollution
