Replacing the oil filter element is a common maintenance operation, but why do oil leakage accidents occur from time to time?

In fact, apart from unfortunately purchasing inferior engine oil filters, the main reason is that there are problems with the installation and operation.

According to the truth, the daily maintenance of replacing the filter element is not complicated, but it is usually quite simple. However, what tests the operational details the most is... Today, I will summarize five standards for installing the oil filter element of the rotary machine.

Oil the sealing ring

Before installation, apply a small amount of engine oil to the sealing ring of the filter to provide lubrication and prevent dry friction between the sealing ring and the filter mounting seat during installation. Applying oil to the sealing ring of the filter helps to soften the rubber material of the sealing ring and reduce friction.

Before installing the oil filter, if the sealing ring is not oiled, it cannot slide smoothly in the groove and on the base during installation and rotation. The sealing ring may be squeezed out of the groove, getting stuck on the groove wall or outside the groove, resulting in poor sealing. Moreover, under conditions of large rotational torque, the sealing ring may be damaged, causing oil leakage.

Tighten the filter by the prescribed number of turns

Due to different shapes, sizes and matching models, the number of rotations required for installation also varies. Given this differentiated installation feature, the general filter housing will indicate the number of turns that need to be tightened after the rotary oil filter element is installed on the base. This step can usually be operated manually.

Tighten the filter to the specified torque

Finally, when a torque wrench is needed, the fastening machine strictly adheres to the standard torque required by the product, typically 20nm. If the regulations are not followed and the operation is carried out blindly, it is easy to cause excessive tightening torque of the filter, resulting in damage to the filter housing, fixing bolts, rubber sealing rings and filter seats. Moreover, when installing the filter, the tightening torque is too large, and it is also not easy to remove it for the next maintenance and replacement.

Don't add too much oil

When refueling, just make sure the liquid level is between the upper and lower limits of the dipstick. When too much oil is added, the oil level in the oil pan will become very high, causing the rapidly moving blades of the crankshaft to come into contact with the engine oil and inflate it, resulting in foam that affects the engine's power output. Meanwhile, engine oil may rush into the combustion chamber to participate in the combustion, causing the phenomenon of burning engine oil. Moreover, excessive engine oil can generate excessive pressure inside the engine, which may overflow through various gaskets and seals, leading to oil leakage.

Start the engine and check for any leakage

After installing the filter and adding engine oil, start the engine and let it idle to ensure the oil circulates fully. Then, check whether there is any leakage at the installation joint of the machine filter by observing and wiping.

After confirming there is no oil leakage, turn it off and let it stand for a period of time. Check the oil level again and only replace the filter after confirming that it is normal.
